David Eugene “Bear” West, 69, of Chattaroy, WA, passed away Jan. 4, 2019 at the Mann Grandstaff VA Medical Center. Dave chose to enter the VA’s Hospice when he realized his medical issues had become insurmountable. Born in Richmond, IN on March 19, 1949 to Charles and Gertrude (Hoy) West, he resided there until he enlisted in the US Army in 1968. Dave served initially in Vietnam through Sept. 1969, and then was stationed in Germany, through June 1974. He received many medals and badges, but he chose to not speak about his time in Vietnam.
Dave was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Kristy Lakes. He is survived by sister Valerie Taylor and brother Michael (Joy) West, both of Indiana. He leaves behind his best friend and love, Sheila Volpone, of Chattaroy, WA. He is also survived by four sons: Charles West and Andy (Grace) West, Post Falls, ID; DJ West, Coeur d’Alene, ID, and Adrien Williams, Tracy, CA, along with many grandchildren.
Dave was an avid sports fan, especially enjoying the Mariners and the Zags. He loved to take road trips and was a great companion in travel. He was a kind, giving, thoughtful man. Special thanks to The VA Medical Center: Urgent Care,ACU, CLC Rehab, and lastly CLC Hospice. Often staff who cared for him previously would visit him, bringing him great happiness. His care at the VA was stellar, with an abundance of kindness, compassion, and skill. Dave would urge all to be Organ Donors, and thanks to SightLife, he was able to fulfill his wish. A memorial service will be held in late March, when Spring arrives, along with March Madness.
