Rev. George J Haspedis
1930-2018
Father George Haspedis died peacefully on November 3rd. He had been a Catholic priest for 62 Years. He was born and raised in Spokane and attended Sacred Heart Grade School and St. Edward’s Seminary. He was ordained a priest in 1956 by Bishop Bernard Topel. In addition to his seminary education he earned a masters degree in education and one in classical languages from Gonzaga University and was a Latin teacher at both Mater Cleri Seminary and Bishop White Seminary. He was also chaplain at Fort Wright College. In 1973 he was appointed pastor of St. Peter Parish in Spokane. Other assignments included pastor of St. Mary’s Parish in the Spokane Valley, and pastor of St. John Vianney Parish and Sacred Heart Parish. He also served as Rector of Bishop White Seminary. He retired from active ministry in 2000 yet he continued to assist at St. Peter Parish until his health required him to fully retire earlier this year. He was known as a dynamic teacher and preacher never tiring of lengthy periods of preparation for his responsibilities. He enjoyed cooking and inviting others for dinner at his home.
His parents, brothers, and sister predeceased him. He is survived by his sister-in-law Anita Haspedis, several nieces, and numerous cousins.
Services for Father Haspedis will be held at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes with the Vigil Service on Thursday November 8, 2018 at 7 P.M. The Funeral Mass will be held Friday, November 9, 2018 at 10 A.M. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.
