Glen Harold Gower

March 28, 1927 ~ June 14, 2022 (age 95) 95 Years Old

Tribute

Glen Harold Gower passed away peacefully on June 14, 2022 at his home in Nine Mile Falls, Spokane Co., Washington. He has finally made it home to his wife after 25 years on earth without her.

Glen was born on March 28, 1927 to Harold Eugene Gower and Alberta Jane (Rosenberger) Gower in Shelby, Toole County, Montana. He grew up and attended grade school in both Shelby and Carmangay, Alberta, Canada. He attended Rogers High School and then North Central High before he was drafted into the US Army in June 1945.

Glen trained at Camp Lee, Virginia and Aberdeen Proving Grounds as a clerk typist. He was promoted to Sargent Major and served on a Troop Transport making 14 crossings across the Atlantic on the USS MT. Vernon, USS Washington, and the St. Albany Victory. After WW II he returned to school and graduated from North Central High School in 1947. He joined the Navy in October 1950 and served in Japan during the Korean War. He was proud of his service in both the Army and the Navy. He honorably discharged from the Navy in July 1952 and began a career as a Federal Employee at Fairchild Airforce Base where he worked until he retired in 1982.

After joining the Navy, Glen met Helen Mae Frerich. He later sent her an engagement ring from Japan. She accepted and they were married at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Spokane, Washington on February 23, 1952 while he was home on leave. They raised 8 children (4 boys and 4 girls) in Spokane, with a brief move to Espanola, Washington, then back to Spokane, and finally settled in Nine Mile Falls, Washington.

He was an active member in the Union for Federal Employees while at Fairchild. He joined the Gentleman on Horseback Ride group in 1982 and was their Trail Boss from 1998-2009. His father, Harold, drove for him on this ride, as did his brother in-law, (Uncle Buck). He was so pleased when our brother, Tom, joined him on these rides in his later years with the club. He also was a member of the Back Country Horseman and the Sons of the American Revolution. He would most likely tell you that his greatest achievements were marrying our mother and raising 8 children. There are too many stories of our childhood to write here, but we all have a favorite memory.

Glen was preceded in death by his wife, Helene, his parents, his brothers: Vernon, Gordon and Jimmie and sisters: Evelyn (Sis), and Marlene. Glen is survived by 4 sons: Robert (Karen), Timothy (Rose), Thomas (Anne), Jerome (Debbie), and 4 daughters Ann Borgman, Elaine Berg, Glenda (Gary) Miller, and Mary Gower. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews who all remember their “Uncle Chic” as a truly wonderful man.
