Mary Julienne Otto Johnson
“Julie” “Jupe” “Otto”
August 3, 1925 ~ December 13, 2018
Mom was born August 3, 1925, in Watertown SD and grew up on a farm with her mother and father (Blanche and Paul Otto), sister Pauline and brother Terry. Stories from those years in Tulare SD with their large extended family entertained and educated her own children through the years. After receiving her RN in Aberdeen SD, Mom ventured west by train and was quickly employed as a charge nurse at Sacred Heart Hospital where she met her future husband, Jay R. Johnson, MD. They were married for 49 years before Dad died in 2003. Together they raised six children and welcomed grandchildren: Jeff (died 2009), Bert (children Stone and Sylvia), Brad (died 1991), Greg (wife Brenda), Mary Gayle, Susie (husband Darrol Hval, children Kristian, Kelly, Kooper, Elizabeth and Mary Bridget). Mom’s support throughout her joy-filled life included sister-in-law Harriet Otto, extended family, many loyal friends, and most recently the caregivers and staff of Family First Senior Care, Sunshine Adult Family Home, and Providence Adult Day Health in Spokane WA.
Causes Mom supported through the years included Hospice of Spokane, Special Olympics and Catholic Charities of Spokane.
