Mena (Peggy) York joined her heavenly Father on Saturday, September 11th surrounded by family. Mena was truly one of the “Great Generation”, one of those people born in the twenties and tempered by depression and war. Her emphasis on life focused on God, Family, and Country. Mena took pride in her home and family. Her home was always “neat as a pin.” She lived her entire life in the Minnehaha (Little Italy) neighborhood in Spokane. She grew up with her brother and sisters, helping raise many of them. Mena’s Catholic faith was paramount in her life, and she was a member of Mary Queen Catholic Church since its inception in 1957.
Mena loved spending time with her family, especially when she could cook for them. You could expect a great spaghetti dinner or a wonderful pie if you were there or in the area. Mena was blessed to have been cared for by her daughters and granddaughter the last several years, along with care givers, Lori and Marsha.
Mena is preceded in death by her husband, Hubert York, and siblings Mary Pelozzie, Joyce Johnson and Nick Qualtieri. Mena is survived by her children, Frankie Cooper, Betty (Larry) Carlier, Linda (Gary) West and Louis (Mary Kay) York. Mena is also survived by 8 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, as well as sisters Theresa Manos and Marlene Whitney.
A viewing will be held at 10:00 am, followed by funeral mass at 11:00 am Monday, September 20th at Mary Queen Parish, 3423 E Carlisle Ave, Spokane, Washington. Graveside Service to follow at Fairmont Memorial Park, 5200 W Wellesley Ave, Spokane, Washington.
