Tribute

Patricia Ann Miller (Peterson)

July 8th, 1937-November 3rd, 2018

Patricia Miller, of Spokane, WA, passed away November 3rd surrounded by her husband Bob, of 61 years, her 6 children and her many grandchildren.

Patricia was a deeply compassionate woman who committed her life to the care of others.  While attending Spokane’s Marycliff High School, she began to discern the possibility of becoming a Franciscan Sister of Perpetual Adoration.   She then entered St. Rose Convent and attended St. Rose High School in La Crosse, Wisconsin.  Eventually, Patricia heard another calling. She wanted to be a wife and mother.  She returned to Spokane and began studies at Sacred Heart School of Nursing.  It was during this time she met Robert K. Miller.   They married in 1957, and in short order started a family that today includes 6 children, 13 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and countless friends who were embraced by Pat and Bob and became family.

Patricia’s nursing career began at Sacred Heart Hospital and continued with Visiting Nurses Association and Hospice of Spokane.  She later attended Gonzaga University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology.   When Patricia and Bob took positions with Alaska’s North Slope Borough School District, she combined her nursing skills and her background in psychology to help meet the varied needs of students and families in the district. Patricia’s keen insights and observations made her an invaluable asset for the district. More importantly, her empathetic nature and compassion made her a trusted friend and member of the communities she served.

Patricia’s primary vocation of care was as wife, mother, grandmother, and friend.  Her acceptance and love without conditions created a home for anyone who needed one.    Her consoling hand held countless others in times of sickness, loneliness and sorrow.  Her warm, genuine and generous hospitality was always offered in times of celebration.  Her infectious laugh and amazing sense of humor brought joy and much laughter to those around her.

We will be forever grateful for the gentle care and kindness that Holy Family Hospital’s 5th floor Acute Care Unit brought to our mom and the family.

It was a great gift to the family to be able to hold mom’s hand and pray with her as Our Lord welcomed her to his Father’s house.   It was our turn to do for her as she had done for us and so many others.

A Rosary Vigil is scheduled for 6:00 PM on Thursday, November 8th at Assumption Catholic Church, to be followed by a Funeral Mass and reception Friday, November 9th at 11:00 AM at Assumption Catholic Church, 3624 W Indian Trail Rd, Spokane, WA 99208.
