Shirley A Schatz

Shirley Schatz is remembered by those who knew her as a welcoming soul with a beautiful smile. She regularly stated that she enjoyed people. She also enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, gardening, and sports, especially the NHL and GU men’s basketball.
Shirley died March 21, 2023 at Cornerstone Court Assisted Living surrounded by her family. Shirley was born in Bienfait, Saskatchewan March 12, 1938 to Ray and Stella Viergutz. While attending secretarial school and living at the YWCA in Regina, Saskatchewan Shirley met her best friend and the love of her life, Gene Schatz. They were married in 1956. Soon after, they moved to California where they welcomed son Ray and daughter Karen. In 1969 they moved to Spokane, Washington. Shirley volunteered and then worked for Spokane Public Schools from the mid 1970’s until her retirement in 1998. Shirley and Gene were married for nearly 54 years. After Gene’s death she moved to Fairwood Retirement Community where she developed several close friendships. Because of health concerns, Shirley moved to Cornerstone Court for the last year of her life where she received the highest quality care. She is preceded in death by her husband Eugene and daughter Karen Dunning. She is survived by her son Raymond (Liz) Schatz, granddaughters Lauren (Jared) Smith, and Kiley (Gus) Schatz-Santos, her son-in-law Michael Dunning, grandson Taylor Dunning, and great grandson Wyatt Dunning.

A memorial Service will be held at 3 PM Friday, April 14, 2023 at Holy Cross Cemetery Chapel 7200 N Wall St. Spokane Wa.
